The Handala hacking group, affiliated with the Ministry of Intelligence and Security, have announced that they have carried out a “unique cyber operation” against the US medical equipment company Stryker.
In a statement the group called the attack a retaliation for the alleged US missile strike on the Minab girls school. Handala claims to have been able to wipe 12,000 terabytes of data from the company’s networks worldwide, apparently using the remote wipe capablity in Microsoft Intune. Employees of the company have reported that this included computers, mobile phones, laptops and other devices.
Stryker have confirmed elements of the reported hack, including the defacement of its intranet with images related to the Handala group.
The US government has not yet commented on the attack, but it appears to be the largest cyber attack by Iran since the beginning of the war. The attack on Stryker, one of the largest suppliers of medical technology in the world, is reportedly causing medical supply chain problems in the US.
Handala announced on its website that “over 200,000 vital company systems were targeted and 12 petabytes of data were wiped”. The group also published various images as evidence of its access to company systems, some of which are shown below.
